I've not heard of this on an E-30, but I doubt there's any significant advantage. The fan clutch is hydraulic; it only engages when the temp demands, and disengages when the car is moving fast enough to shove enough air through the radiator. I wouldn't bother.

I've done this on both of my Nissan's, but I'm not certain it made any HP difference. It did however make it easier to work on both cars and looks better without any performance decrease. I'll show whichever one I have to you at the drive.

E30's in Europe that did not have A/C came without an engine-driven fan. They came with the electric fan only. If your electric fan is working properly and your A/C is no longer functional, you can safely remove the engine-driven fan and its viscous coupling.

On a hot summer day, in traffic with the A/C on, you would need both fans. Otherwise, either one has the capacity to move enough air through the radiator.

I have a Zirgo 16" puller fan (if you have no a/c, get a pusher fan - mine is made to pull, but can push simply by reversing the wiring). Spal also makes very good fans (I would have gone with a Spal, but I needed a slimmer fan).

Zionsville sells a competition radiator/electric fan kit:

At $787, might not be exactly what you're looking for...

I bought their radiator and the Zirgo fan and it was much cheaper than their combo kit.
