- President’s Letter
Greetings BMW fans,
Welcome to another edition of the Gesundheit. Our tireless editor Ernie Peters has put together another great issue. As usual, he has brought us a wonderful mix, and it is a reflection of our Club’s breadth. We try to balance members’ varied interests in social activities, technical aspects, track events, personal stories, upcoming events, and the BMWCCA itself.
Our Holiday Party is first, since it occurred the furthest in the past (and yet only a few short months ago!). I want to offer my heartfelt thanks to Dr. Ed Yepez, who with his wife Michelle have made these holiday parties happen for the past several years, working many months in advance to reserve the location, arrange the catering, secure raffle items from all the sponsors, and run the event. Any of you who have put together something similar (heck, even a child’s birthday party) can appreciate what goes into a big affair, and paradoxically the better run it is, the less all that effort is visible. Most of you know Ed has long been active in our club and served on the board for much of that time, and contributed in countless ways to the spirit of the St. Louis BMW Club. Take a moment to give Ed a pat on the back next time you see him.
Next up is Carol Gardner, here in her role as BMWCCA Foundation Ambassador (Carol serves our Club in many other ways, as Club Secretary and also Street Survival Ambassador) talking about the Chapter Challenge. Since it is just getting started, it would be nice to get more folks using AmazonSmile and maybe even buy a brick or two.
Bob Marsh and Steve Smart contributed nice pieces on our Dyno Day Tech Event at Franjo Speed and our go-karting outing at Pole Position, respectively. Thanks to you both for writing those up — two terrific events! We’ve got several more great tech and fun driving events like these on the calendar for the rest of the year. See our calendar at the end of this issue. (Pro Tip: You can also subscribe to our electronic calendar so you’re always up to date — stlbmwcca.org/wordpress/calendar/ and click on the +Google Calendar button at the bottom right.)
Ernie Peters shares his walkthrough of changing the valve cover on his daughter’s MINI in this month’s technical article. Even with our modern cars, it’s great to see there’s still plenty we can do in our own garages.
Speaking of modern, did you know it’s the 100th anniversary of BMW this year? Joe Chamberlain sent in a great video on the history of our favorite marque, so be sure to check that out. Mandatory viewing for all members interested in the club’s history.
It’s springtime and a lot of new drivers will be logging their first miles on the road. If you know of any, please encourage them to sign up for one of the four Street Survival Schools going on in St. Louis this year (we’re leading two of them, and our good friends at the SCCA the other two). Likewise, for all of you who haven’t taught a young driver at Street Survival, please sign up to help keep a teenager safe. Ask anyone who’s done it — you will have a wonderful time doing it and feel great you’re sharing your knowledge and time. This issue we’ve got a terrific article on what Street Survival is all about.
So with that, I thank you for reading the Gesundheit and for being a part of this Club. Our members who participate actively make us who we are. Please take the opportunity to enjoy reading about all that’s going on in our club, letting those who took part in events to enjoy the memory of it, and hopefully enticing those of you who couldn’t make it to come out to the next one.
All my best, and hope to see you soon!
St. Louis BMW Club President for 2016
Your Gesundheit is here!
The Gesundheit is the quarterly magazine of the St. Louis Chapter. Inside you will find articles and commentary from members and club officers, discussing everything from recent events and tech tips to tales of road trips and thoughts on classic and contemporary BMW models.
In addition to articles and messages from the board members, you will find a lot of other important information such as a calendar of events, event application forms, classifieds, and news from the national club which can affect us on a local level.
Gesundheit is published 4 times a year. It is mailed to all St. Louis Chapter members, advertisers, other BMW chapters around the country, as well as all board members of the national BMW CCA.
Like everything in the club, however, the Gesundheit can never live up to it’s potential without the help of members like you! We invite you to share your stories, tips, articles, letters, pictures, etc. Please email us or send your submission to:
